NHK reported this morning that Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Aso is slated to participate in the U.S.-Japan summit in Washington next week and coordination is underway for him to hold a meeting with Secretary of the Treasury Mnuchin. The network said the possibility of discussing currency provisions in the ongoing trade talks is expected to be the main topic of the meeting. The broadcaster observed that while the U.S. is keen to include a currency clause in a bilateral trade agreement in order to protect U.S. exports from currency manipulation, Japan is against the idea out of fear that its hands would be tied if intervention becomes necessary to curb the yen’s appreciation.
