TV Asahi reported this morning that in light of active lobbying by major foreign casino operators to open casinos in Yokohama after the enactment last year of the implementing laws for integrated resorts with casinos, Chairman Yukio Fujiki of the Port of Yokohama Promotion Association, a prominent business leader, has indicated that he will launch the “Yokohama Harbor Resort Association” in May to counter the casino operators’ moves by proposing new tourism projects other than casinos to revitalize the local economy. Fujiki is reportedly “absolutely opposed” to having casinos in Yokohama because he feels they will only earn profits for foreign businesses and lead to serious gambling addiction. He was quoted as saying that he has already received inquiries on a number of major projects, such as the FIA Formula One World Championship.
