With the agreement reached on April 22 between the Japan Business Federation [Keidanren] and universities to increase year-round recruitment of new university graduates, the Nikkei implemented a spot survey of 100 major companies. A total of 80% of companies said that they are either already recruiting year-round or are considering doing so. The survey thus showed that a high percentage of companies think that a flexible recruitment environment is necessary to secure diverse human resources, including Japanese students with study abroad experience, international students, and foreign human resources, amid today’s “buyer’s market.”

Keidanren and university representatives announced their agreement at the April 22 meeting of the joint academia-industry council. In response, the Nikkei conducted a spot poll of the major companies in Japan that is contacts for its regular polls of major companies. A total of 112 presidents (including chairmen) or officials of major companies responded. (Abridged)
