Coordination is underway between the Japanese and South Korean governments for a defense ministers’ meeting on the sidelines of the Asia Security Summit (the Shangri-La Dialogue) slated for May 31 to June 2 in Singapore, Sankei Shimbun learned on May 8. If realized, it will be the first defense ministerial since last October and since an ROK warship illuminated a Maritime Self-Defense Force patrol plane with its fire-control radar on Dec. 20 last year. The defense ministers will apparently discuss the Korean Peninsula situation and the radar illumination incident. (Abridged)
