Japan to continue active participation in NPT talks: Suga

Tokyo, May 13 (Jiji Press) — Japan will continue to actively participate in discussions on nuclear disarmament, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Monday.

Suga’s comment came after the preparatory committee for the 2020 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference failed to come up with recommendations for the conference at its meeting that ended in New York Friday due to a divide between nuclear-haves and have-nots.

“Japan hopes to continue active participation in the discussions,” Suga told a press conference in Tokyo.

“To realize a world without nuclear weapons, it is important to keep making realistic and practical efforts while gaining cooperation from nuclear and nonnuclear nations,” he also said.
