Tokyo, May 14 (Jiji Press) — Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have concluded an agreement on the promotion of technical cooperation.

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono and visiting ASEAN Secretary-General Lim Jock Hoi signed the agreement on Monday at the Japanese Foreign Ministry’s Iikura Guest House in central Tokyo.

Under the agreement, the government-affiliated Japan International Cooperation Agency will be able to dispatch experts to the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta to engage in the coordination of cooperation for efforts to improve ASEAN countries’ administrative capabilities and projects in environmental fields in such nations.

The signing of the agreement apparently reflects Japan’s aim to enhance its presence in Southeast Asia to counter China’s growing influence in the region.
