The Japanese and Chinese governments will hold the first session of their “development cooperation dialogue” in Beijing on May 23 to discuss cooperation on official development assistance (ODA) and humanitarian assistance to third countries. The Yomiuri Shimbun learned of the plan from multiple sources involved in Japan-China relations on May 16.

Through the dialogue, Japan is hoping to urge China to abide by international rules in providing development assistance under its Belt and Road initiative aimed at building a massive economic bloc. (Abridged)
