The government has decided to accept more refugees under the “third-country resettlement program” starting next fiscal year in order to protect refugees who have temporarily fled to other countries. Japan currently receives refugees only from Myanmar, but it plans to eliminate the restriction on nationality and double the current annual ceiling of about 30 to 60 or so. The government will hold a meeting of the “liaison and coordination committee for measures for dealing with refugees” in June before obtaining cabinet approval. (Abridged)
