Okinawa Vice Governor Kiichiro Jahana and Kunisada Uehara, director of the civil engineering and construction department within the prefecture government, visited the Okinawa office of U.S. Forces Japan (USFJ) and the U.S. Consulate-General in Okinawa on May 17 to request the return and joint use of USFJ-controlled facilities and areas and on-site surveys ahead of the return to promote the construction of roads and improvement of river banks. The prefecture requested the prioritization of discussion on ten projects and both USFJ and the Consulate-General responded that they will consider these positively.

A request is being made every year. The ten projects include the construction of a roadway connecting Ginowan and Kitanakagusu, which concerns Camp Zukeiran, and an Okinawa loop line, which concerns the Kadena airfield, as well as the improvement of Hija River. (Abridged)
