On May 17, the Okinawa Defense Bureau revealed plans to subsidize the improvement of the Chatan water treatment plant, which the government of Okinawa Prefecture has been requesting, as a project funded by the Ministry of Defense starting from this fiscal year to respond to the detection of high concentrations of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) compounds and other toxic substances in water taken from the river near the U.S. Air Force’s Kadena Air Base. The injection of public money into the water treatment facility that the prefecture’s enterprise department has been working to improve to remove the toxic substances highlights that the government by and large acknowledges the correlation between the compounds found in the river and the Kadena base.
