TOKYO – Regarding the detection of perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), a substance believed to be harmful to human health, in areas near U.S. Air Force’s Kadena Air Base, the Ministry of Defense revealed on May 21 that it has submitted to the U.S. military a request about the use of products that contain PFHxS.

The MOD also explained the same day that it has requested the U.S. side to replace fire extinguishers that contain perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), a chemical believed to cause cancer, as soon as possible. The U.S. has reportedly accepted the request and is taking action to replace the fire extinguishers at an early date. (Abridged)
