On May 22, Diet Affairs Committee Chairperson Hiroshi Moriyama of the Liberal Democratic Party told the press in Tokyo that he believes the first party leaders’ debates for the ongoing Diet session will be held on June 19.
Party leaders’ debates are customarily held on Wednesday. The ruling and opposition parties’ policy chiefs of the Committee on Fundamental National Policies of both houses agreed to hold leaders’ debates in June. “Taking into account Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s schedule, we will not be able to hold debates on June 5 and June 12,” Moriyama told the press. If realized, party leaders’ debates will be held for the first time in a year, since June of 2018.
