The government has compiled the draft goals of research and development projects in which it will invest more than 100 billion yen under the “moonshot research and development system.” The system is aimed at achieving innovation that significantly changes people’s lives. The 21 goals range from the fields of energy and environment to urban communities to space, such as “eliminating marine plastic waste” and “developing underground space on a large scale.” The government plans to start discussions on the draft goals at an expert panel to be held on May 23 and narrow them down by summer before publicly seeking research projects for materializing the goals.
