President Trump to visit Japan

All national dailies reported on Saturday morning that President Trump and First Lady Melania are expected to arrive in Tokyo this evening, emphasizing that the couple will be the first state guests in the Reiwa Era. The papers highlighted a tweet that the President posted upon his departure from Washington. “Looking forward to honoring, on behalf of the United States, His Majesty, the Emperor of Japan” the President wrote. “I will also be discussing trade and military with my friend, Prime Minister Abe.”

NHK separately reported that after arriving at Haneda Airport around 5 p.m., President Trump will hold a meeting with Japanese business leaders at the official residence of the U.S. Ambassador to Japan. The network added that although an unnamed senior USG official had told the press earlier that the President’s trip this time is intended to celebrate the beginning of Japan’s new era, the U.S. leader might still step up pressure on Japan to open up its market in a planned meeting with PM Abe, as he wrote in a tweet that he will be discussing trade.
