Abe’s lavish display of camaraderie works well at least for now

Fuji TV’s White House correspondent Fujita reported that according to a White House source, President Trump is very pleased by the red carpet treatment he received from the Japanese government. The journalist said by entertaining the President with golf and sumo ahead of the summit meeting, Prime Minister Abe successfully drew a concession from the President, who said he is now willing to wait for sealing a trade deal with Japan until after the July Upper House election. An unnamed U.S. government source reportedly told Fujita that Japan’s preparations for hosting the President orchestrated by the premier proved to be a “winning strategy.” The reporter added, however, that the Japanese leader may end up being forced to make greater concessions in trade talks by President Trump, who may choose to ratchet up the pressure on Tokyo with his presidential reelection bid in mind.
