Before dawn on May 25, the Naha Police Station arrested on the spot Miguel Magana, a 26-year-old sergeant of the U.S. Marine Corps in Okinawa, for violation of the Road Traffic Act (driving under the influence of alcohol). The suspect allegedly drove his car while intoxicated in Tomari district in Naha City. The suspect denies the charge, saying, “I thought I had already sobered up.”

The allegation is that around 4:15 a.m. on May 25, the suspect drove his car in Naha City under the influence of alcohol with the amount of alcohol over the legal limit (0.15 mg per liter of exhalation).

While patrolling, the police noticed the suspect was driving a vehicle in poor condition and stopped him. While questioning him, the police smelled alcohol on his breath and conducted a breathalyzer test. The suspect said he drank beer and cocktails at a restaurant in the city until the evening of May 24.
