Minister for Foreign Affairs Taro Kono met with his Philippine counterpart Teodoro Lopez Locsin at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on May 29. They confirmed cooperation in protecting and appropriately accepting Filipino workers who come to Japan under the “specified skills” residence status that was introduced this April. They also exchanged opinions about the South China Sea, where China is building military bases, and the North Korean situation.

Locsin is visiting Japan together with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. The president is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on May 31.
