The new Chinese ambassador to Japan has arrived in Tokyo to take up his post.

Kong Xuanyou arrived at Tokyo’s Haneda airport on Thursday to succeed Cheng Yonghua who was in office for more than nine years.

Kong told reporters at the airport that he feels a great responsibility to take up the post at an important time of improving and developing the China-Japan relations. He said he will do his best to build relations that are suitable for the new era. He also said political mutual trust between China and Japan should be raised to a higher level, if new relations that will meet the needs of the era are to be built.

Kong also spoke about China’s aspirations over the G20 summit to be held in Osaka next month. He said that China will work to appeal to the international community to protect the system of multilateral and free trade.

He made the remarks amid escalating trade friction between China and the United States.
