Gist of joint statement issued after Japan-U.S.-ROK defense ministerial on June 2

The following is the gist of the joint statement issued after the defense ministerial meeting between Japan, the U.S., and South Korea on June 2.

 

Japan, the U.S., and South Korea:

  • Will closely cooperate to establish complete denuclearization and permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.
  • Exchanged opinions on North Korea’s recent missile launches. Reaffirmed the need to continue exercising vigilance.
  • Will deter and halt North Korea’s illicit ship-to-ship transfers. Reaffirmed sustained international cooperation to eliminate them.
  • Underscored the importance of the international community’s commitment to fully implementing UN Security Council resolutions [on North Korea].
  • Reaffirmed the “international community’s shared goal” of having North Korea fulfill its international obligations by achieving complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.
  • Reaffirmed that the security cooperation led by the three countries is playing an important role. Will promote cooperation that includes information sharing, high-level policy consultations, and joint exercises.
