U.S. Embassy deputy chief of mission visits Iwate to observe reconstruction from 3/11

The Saturday edition of Iwate Nippo reported on a visit on Friday by Deputy Chief of Mission Young to the cities of Rikuzentakata and Ofunato in Iwate Prefecture. The paper wrote that in Ofunato, DCM Young visited a local facility for disaster prevention and tourism to learn about the progress being made on the city’s reconstruction from the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The paper also wrote that during his meeting with Mayor Toda, the DCM commented on the municipality’s recent exchanges with the United States under a GOJ-sponsored host town program for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games called Tokyo“Arigato” Host Town for Supporting Reconstruction, quoting him as  saying that he was impressed with the progress being made on reconstruction and expressing hope that the city will deepen its exchanges with the United States. The mayor expressed his gratitude for the support the United States extended following the March 11 disaster.


Tokai Shimpo, a daily based in Ofunato, also reported on the DCM’s visit to the region. Concerning Rikuzentakata’s sister-city relationship with Crescent City in the United States, the DCM reportedly told Mayor Toba that he hopes the two cities will further deepen their relationship.
