New U.S. Marine Corps commander in Okinawa

There was a change of command ceremony  at the U.S. military’s Camp Courtney in Uruma City [Okinawa Prefecture] on May 31. Lt. Gen. Herman Clardy became the III Marine Expeditionary Force commanding general as well as commander, Marine Forces Japan. He also assumed the post of the Okinawa Area Coordinator. Okinawa Vice Governor Kiichiro Jahana and others attended the ceremony.

 

III Marine Expeditionary Force is a unit capable of responding to an emergency situation such as a contingency on the Korean Peninsula. After the ceremony, Lt. Gen. Clardy, referring to the relocation of the Futenma airfield in Ginowan City to the Henoko district in Nago City, emphasized to the press, “When the relocation is completed, we are obligated to move there, but until then, we will continue our operations at the Futenma base.”
