Sankei wrote that during a meeting on space development held at the Kantei yesterday, Prime Minister Abe called for accelerated inter-agency coordination so that the administration can officially decide this year on its participation in the Lunar Orbital Platform-Gateway, a NASA-orchestrated international program to develop a space station that will orbit the moon. Relevant ministries and agencies are expected to identify and address issues concerning Japan’s role in the lunar exploration initiative, such as possible contributions by local commercial startups. Participants in the GOJ space meeting also reportedly discussed space collaboration with India and Abe’s plan to call for the establishment of international rules on space debris at the upcoming G-20 summit in Osaka.
