Asahi front-paged the disclosure by several MOD sources that the GOJ is planning to use a newly built seawall off Camp Schwab as a platform for unloading sand and earth for land reclamation. Noting that a separate seawall has been used for the same purpose over the past six months, the daily said the new operation, which will begin as early as next Monday, is intended to expedite the landfill work for FRF construction. An unnamed senior MOD official was quoted as saying: “This represents the Abe administration’s commitment to follow through with the Futenma relocation initiative.” The daily added that the prefectural government is likely to call for a halt to the use of the seawall as a pier for earth-carrying vessels.
