Japan’s Foreign Minister Taro Kono says the country will use its position as a friend to both the United States and Iran to help ease tensions between them.

Japanese officials are arranging for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to visit Iran in mid-June and meet Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani.

Kono spoke about Abe’s trip to the Lower House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday.

Kono said Japan is on neutral ground concerning religion in the Middle East, and has had no negative involvement with the region. He also stressed Japan’s longtime friendship with Iran.

Kono added that Japan can talk candidly with all parties involved and will spare no effort to ease regional tensions through dialogue.
