The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) will strengthen protection of intellectual property held by Japanese farmers and seed manufacturers regarding new varieties of wagyu and fruit. By more thoroughly controlling distribution and increasing penalties, MAFF will make it harder for the varieties to be taken out of the country. On June 7, MAFF will present its policy at a meeting of the government’s “Headquarters on Creating Dynamism through Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery Industries and Local Communities” (chaired by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe). MAFF will then aim to amend related legislation. (Abridged)
