Sankei front-paged a report saying that it has learned from multiple GOJ sources that the MSDF destroyer Izumo has been conducting joint drills with the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan in the South China Sea since June 10. The paper speculated that the drills involving important U.S. and Japanese naval assets are intended to demonstrate their deterrence against China.
