At its board meeting held in the National Diet building on June 12, the suprapartisan Japan-South Korea Parliamentarians’ League (chaired by Fukushiro Nukaga) confirmed it will hold a joint general assembly with the South Korea-Japan Parliamentarians’ League (chaired by Kang Chang-il) in Tokyo on Sept. 18.

“It is extremely regrettable that Japan and South Korea have grown distant and ties have become icy,” Nukaga commented, expressing the desire to foster exchange among parliamentarians with an eye to improving the bilateral relationship. He said this after citing the South Korean Supreme Court’s rulings ordering Japanese companies to pay compensation to former South Korean requisitioned workers, the comfort women issue, and the illumination of a Maritime Self-Defense Force patrol plane by a South Korean Navy destroyer’s fire-control radar.
