All TV networks reported today that Defense Minister Iwaya met with Akita Governor Satake this morning to apologize for the use of flawed data to explain the Aegis Ashore deployment plan in Akita City and for a ministry official dozing off at a meeting with local residents. NTV and TBS said that Satake told him that unless the ministry goes back to the drawing board to reconsider its plan, Akita will not be able to start discussions on this issue. Iwaya reiterated his request for the governor’s support for the Aegis Ashore deployment. TV Asahi observed that since it will be difficult to regain Akita’s trust, the Defense Ministry’s deployment plan might be delayed substantially. Iwaya is reportedly also scheduled to meet with Akita Mayor Hozumi today.
