Social Democratic Party leader Seiji Mataichi (proportional representative, elected three times, aged 74), announced at a press conference held on June 18 that he will not run in this summer’s House of Councillors election. He cited his health and age as reasons for his non-candidacy. The SDP leader intends to remain at his post until February next year to serve out his term. On the question of a possible run in the House of Representatives election, he said, “There is a possibility.” He underwent surgery for lung cancer in May.
