NHK reported online today that the International Press Institute, an organization consisting of members of the media from over 100 countries, wrote to Prime Minister Abe to ask him to take up freedom of the press at the G20 Osaka Summit. The IPI said it made the request in light of the increasing suppression of press freedom in many countries, such as the murder of journalists in Mexico and the imprisonment of reporters in Turkey. IPI also cited the investigation of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation over alleged leaking of military secrets.
