MSDF, JCG conduct joint training in South China Sea

Asahi and Sankei reported that MSDF and Japan Coast Guard vessels carried out a joint drill off the coast of Brunei on Wednesday, saying that it was extremely unusual for the coast guard, which is responsible for patrolling territorial waters, to conduct joint training with the MSDF overseas. While explaining that enhanced operational coordination and information sharing between the two entities are critical to defend the Senkakus and other remote Japanese islets in the East China Sea, the article conjectured that the naval training was perhaps intended to hold China’s militarization of the South China Sea in check.
