The number of “cafeterias for children,” or “kodomo shokudo” in Japanese, that provide free or low-priced food to local children, has reached at least 3,718 across the nation. The finding was released by the nonprofit organization Zenkoku kodomo shokudo shien center Musubie [Musubie national center for supporting children’s cafeterias] at a press conference in Tokyo on June 26. The figure was up 60% from a survey conducted last year. The NPO analyzes that the increase is attributable to “a growing recognition that children’s cafeterias are not only a measure against poverty but also serve as places for local people to communicate with each other.” (Abridged)
