OSAKA — The following is the gist of talks between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Osaka.
Abe and Trump:
— agreed to boost Japan-U.S. alliance.
— agreed to advance talks for a bilateral trade deal.
— agreed to cooperate in dealing with security challenges such as North Korea and Iran.
— had no discussions on reviewing Japan-U.S. security treaty.
Abe:
— called for diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in the Middle East.
— sought cooperation from Trump so that G-20 can issue a powerful message.
Trump:
— called for need to reduce trade deficit with Japan.
— offered full support for Abe’s resolve to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in bid to settle the issue of Pyongyang’s past abduction of Japanese nationals.
