The Fisheries Agency announced on July 5 that it will jointly conduct a visual survey with the International Whaling Commission (IWC) from July 6 to elucidate the current conditions of cetacean resources in the North Pacific. Japan is under international criticism for withdrawing from the IWC and recommencing commercial whaling this month, and the nation hopes to gain the understanding of the international community by demonstrating its cooperative stance toward resource management. The survey, which has been conducted every year since 2010, will be continued this year as well. The joint survey is scheduled to be implemented in the waters of the Gulf of Alaska through Sept. 28.
