Minister Kono: It is extremely problematic that the South Korean government leaves unaddressed its violation of the Japan-ROK basic pact as well as the Japan-ROK pact on the settlement of claims and economic cooperation. It is truly regrettable that [South Korea] did not accept arbitration. What South Korea is doing is equivalent to overturning the post-World War II international order. Japan strongly urges South Korea to rectify this situation.
ROK Ambassador Nam Gwan-pyo: Japan’s unilateral imposition of (tighter export controls on semiconductor materials) is injurious to both nations and to companies. A situation that escalates tensions between the two nations must be resolved immediately. (The lawsuit involving wartime requisitioned workers) is a civil case. Thus the litigants are free to respond as they choose. We have already informed Japan of our proposal.
Minister Kono: We have already told South Korea that we absolutely can’t accept its proposal. It is extremely contemptuous to feign ignorance and make the proposal again.
