On July 23, the Narita Police Station in Chiba Prefecture arrested Michael Edward Applegate, a U.S. national and contract firefighter at a U.S. military base, for the alleged possession of a handgun with live bullets and violation of the Swords and Firearms Control Law (aggravated possession of firearms) at Narita International Airport, where he was in transit. According to the police, he said that he works at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa Prefecture. He reportedly said the gun is “mine and I may have been put it inside the suitcase by accident while I was packing in a rush.”

The suspect was arrested at Terminal 1 inside Narita International Airport around 05:50 p.m. on July 22 for carrying an automatic gun with live bullets and a cartridge holder. The gun and the cartridge each contained 14 bullets.
