On Aug. 2, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Secretary General Toshihiro Nikai, 80, reached the record of the longest-serving LDP secretary general in history, former Lower House President Shigezaburo Maeo. Nikai will surpass Maeo as the longest-serving secretary general on Aug. 3 by serving 1,096 days. He led the LDP and its junior coalition partner Komeito to victory in the Upper House election in July, securing a majority of the contested seats. But all eyes are focused on whether he remains in the post after a cabinet reshuffle and appointment of new party officials scheduled for September. (Abridged)
