[The following is the gist of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s press conference on Aug. 6, 2019.]
Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty
The situation in which we cannot avoid terminating the treaty is not desirable. I will endeavor to build mutual understanding with related countries, such as the United States, Russia, and China, so that arms control initiatives move forward with the involvement of such parties.
Changes to cabinet and Liberal Democratic Party executive lineup
I will give thorough and thoughtful consideration to this matter over the summer.
Japan-South Korea relations
South Korea is violating the international treaty that is the foundation of the normalization of diplomatic ties between our countries by unilaterally committing acts that run counter to the Japan-ROK Agreement on the Settlement of Problems concerning Property and Claims and on Economic Cooperation. First and foremost, I would like to see South Korea fully uphold this pact that is related to the basis of the relationship between our two nations.
Strait of Hormuz
Based on such factors as our relationship with the United States and Iran, I will make a comprehensive assessment to determine an effective way to respond in order to ensure the safety of navigation of Japan-related vessels.
