Chinese vice president to attend Emperor’s enthronement ceremony

Citing a source on Japan-China relations, Yomiuri reported on Sunday that coordination is underway for Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan to visit Japan in the latter half of October to attend the Emperor’s enthronement ceremony on Oct. 22. Japan and China are reportedly conducting a series of high-level exchanges to pave the way for President Xi Jinping’s visit as state guest next spring. The paper wrote that while Wang is no longer a member of the powerful seven-member Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China’s Politburo, he remains very influential and is treated as the “eighth member” of the Standing Committee. Asahi, Mainichi, and Nikkei filed similar reports on Monday.
