NSA Bolton mentions possibility of Japan going nuclear

Jiji reported from Washington on a Voice of America interview with National Security Advisor Bolton, during which he reportedly spoke about the important role that China can play in achieving North Korea’s denuclearization.  The top White House security official reportedly expressed the view that Beijing is worried about Japan potentially going nuclear if North Korea is allowed to possess nuclear weapons. “China does not want North Korea to have nuclear weapons because they believe it would cause ‘instability in Northeast Asia’…. I think that analysis is absolutely right. And what they mean by ‘instability in Northeast Asia’ is Japan getting nuclear weapons. The longer that Japan looks at a nuclear North Korea, the greater the incentive … for Japan to get its own nuclear weapons.”
