Monday’s Yomiuri led with a report saying that it has learned from several GOJ sources that the GOJ is mulling the idea of launching a satellite that will block foreign “killer satellites” aiming to attack the satellites of other countries in the event of a contingency. The paper speculated the plan is intended to strengthen Japan’s deterrence in outer space in response to the development of such killer satellites by Russia and China, adding that Tokyo is hoping to make an official decision on the plan by the end of next fiscal year in order to launch the satellite in the mid-2020s.
