Monday’s Yomiuri front-paged a report saying that the GOJ is making final arrangements to include the vision of a “free and open Indo-Pacific” in a declaration to be adopted at the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7) to be held in Yokohama on Aug. 28-30. The paper speculated that Japan is hoping to demonstrate its efforts to support Africa’s development together with the United States in view of China’s growing influence in the region. The paper wrote that Japan is planning to explain to African nations the vision’s principle of promoting quality infrastructure investment in accordance with international standards at the TICAD meeting in view of the fact that some nations have fallen into China’s “debt trap.”
