Monday’s Mainichi wrote that it has learned from multiple GOJ sources that it is strongly suspected that during drills conducted over international waters in the East China Sea in May, several Chinese JH-7 fighter bombers may have used two MSDF destroyers as targets. According to the sources, the MSDF vessels were not aware of the moves of the Chinese aircraft because the aircraft did not lock their radars on the Japanese ships to automatically track them as targets. However, several signal monitoring units of the Ground, Maritime, and Air Self Defense Forces detected pilot communications from the Chinese aircraft saying that they would use MSDF ships as targets in their drills. Kyodo News filed a similar report.
