Chinese Communist Party official tells Diet members, “We can settle the situation in Hong Kong”

By Kiyota Higa

BEIJING – A group of members of the “Japan-China next generation exchange committee,” which is now visiting China, met with Huang Kunming, head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, for about an hour at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Aug. 19. The Japanese bipartisan parliamentary group comprises such members as Lower House members Kiyohiko Toyama of Komeito and Gaku Hashimoto of the Liberal Democratic Party.

Toyama touched on the turmoil in Hong Kong and said, “We are hoping for an early, peaceful resolution.” Huang underscored, “The Chinese and Hong Kong governments have enough power to settle and control the situation in Hong Kong.” But he did not mention any detailed measures for resolving the confusion.
