Gist of Japan-ROK Foreign Ministers’ meeting

[The following is the gist of the meeting between Foreign Minister Taro Kono and South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung Wha held on Aug. 21, 2019.] 


Former South Korean requisitioned workers


Kono: Japan seeks to have the South Korean side promptly rectify its violation of international law.


Both Ministers: Sharing the awareness that this is the largest issue between their nations, the two Ministers agree to continue to work toward a resolution.    


Export controls


Kang: South Korea has serious concerns regarding its removal from [Japan’s] list of countries receiving preferential trade treatment and seeks to have Japan retract the measure.


Kono: The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is open to discussion if certain conditions are fulfilled. Coordination of the prerequisite conditions for talks should be left in the hands of the (export control) authorities of each country.


General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA)


Kang: Extension of the GSOMIA is under review.


Protection of Japanese nationals in South Korea


Kono: Tokyo has serious concerns about the demonstrations, boycott movements, and the like taking place in South Korea and asks Seoul to do everything possible to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals in the country.


Disposal of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant


Kang: South Korea takes this situation seriously and asks the Japanese government to exercise wise judgment.


Kono: Japan will continue to promote the disclosure of information.


Japan-South Korea relations


Both Ministers: The two Ministers agree on the importance of continuing to communicate so that issues can be resolved by the two countries’ diplomatic authorities.
