The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has decided to launch with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism a full-scale discussion toward the addition of a fifth runway at Haneda Airport, which has too few arrival and departure slots. The metropolitan government made the decision in the belief that further enhancement of the functions of the airport serving the Japanese capital is indispensable for improving Japan’s international competitiveness. It plans to draw up a long-term plan stretching to the 2040s after the 2020 Olympic and Paralympics Games in Tokyo. The runway plan will be included in a draft long-term plan to be released soon by the metropolitan government. (Abridged)
