Minister Seko criticizes ROK’s stricter radiation checks on food imports from Japan

NHK reported today that at a news conference this morning, Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Seko commented on the ROK’s plan to double the number of radiation checks on certain fishery products imported from Japan from Aug. 23. Asked if this measure is retaliation against Japan’s tightening controls on exports to the ROK, Seko said that the measures taken by Japan are internationally recognized administrative procedures and it is “undesirable” to link this to other issues. With regard to the ROK’s demand for information disclosure on the handling of radiation contaminated water leaked from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant, Seko said the South Korean Embassy has been briefed and Japan will continue to provide information not only to the ROK but also to other countries.
