Tetsuro Fukuyama and Hirofumi Hirano, the secretaries-general of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ) and Democratic Party for the People (DPFP), respectively, met on Sept. 5 and apparently discussed matters concerning the formation of their joint floor groups in both houses of the Diet including how to manage the floor groups, personnel, and policies. The CDPJ is calling on the DPFP to support its policies, including a bill aimed at reducing reliance on nuclear power. The DPFP and the CDPJ take different approaches to nuclear power. At a Sept. 4 convention held by the Federation of Electric Power Related Industry Workers Unions of Japan, Yuichiro Tamaki, the leader of the DPFP, noted: “Since we are different parties, we have decided to pursue policies that take into account our own stances. We have reached a significant agreement.”
