Ministry requests no budget for fast-reactor construction with France

The economy ministry did not include the cost of building the ASTRID [Advanced Sodium Technological Reactor for Industrial Demonstration] fast reactor in its budgetary request for fiscal 2020, sources told the NIKKEI Business Daily. This was prompted by France’s decision to significantly scale down the joint project with Japan to develop the fast reactor.

Japan has decided to decommission the “Monju” prototype fast-breeder reactor in Fukui Prefecture and so wanted the ASTRID plan to serve as the pillar of its fast reactor development for the time being. But the outlook for the ASTRID plan has become uncertain. (Abridged)
