At a press conference held on Sept. 10, Minister of Foreign Affairs Taro Kono reflected on his service at the ministry since August 2017 and assessed a number of foreign policies he has implemented during his tenure of over two years as the country’s top diplomat.

On Japan’s ties with South Korea, Kono expressed regret over the ruling made last October by the Supreme Court of Korea on a case involving former requisitioned workers. “South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Kyung-wha and I were eagerly trying to create a new era in the Japan-South Korea relationship,” he said. “Momentum came to a complete halt, however, with the Supreme Court decision. It was truly regrettable.”
